Purpose of the Program
Improvements in digital technology have allowed for the use of CT in the practice of radiation therapy to more accurately plan and individualize treatment for each patient. Use of CT has allowed for more accurate treatment simulation, treatment planning and treatment delivery. The success of cancer treatment is dependent on the accuracy and the quality of the design and delivery of the radiation beam. Use of CT improves targeting of the cancer and the avoidance of unnecessary irradiation to normal tissue.
The intent of the CTRT Certificate program is to provide a mechanism for radiation therapists to demonstrate knowledge and competence in the use of CT, promote standards of excellence within this clinical area, and to identify those who have met a nationally recognized standard.
Program Overview
There is a didactic (coursework) and clinical portion of the program. You must actively opt-in and register to each element. The purpose of the clinical component, called the Summary of Clinical Competence (SCC), is to allow the technologist to record procedures performed under the supervision of an experienced Clinical Advisor (CA) that attests to the technologist’s competence in the performance the competencies. Programs are updated annually and all details are in the certificate Handbook – please carefully read it before registration. The following is an overview of the program. For detailed information, download the Program Handbook.
Credential
Candidates who successfully complete the didactic and clinical components as per the CTRT certificate program requirements receive a CT Therapy Certificate and can use the credential CTRT.
As of January 2016, the CAMRT has changed the name and credential associated with the CTIC – Radiation Therapy Program. This program is now called the CT Therapy Certificate Program and the credential given for completion of the program has changed from CTIC (RT) to CTRT. The Committee strongly advocates for continued competence through continuing professional development.
