This week’s member spotlight Shivam Pandya.
- Can you describe your current role and area of practice within medical radiation technology (please state your designation)?
My name is Shivam Pandya, and I work as an X-ray Technologist (Medical Radiation Technologist – Radiography) at Gore Diagnostic Imaging. My primary responsibilities include performing general radiographic examinations, ensuring patient safety and comfort, following radiation protection principles such as ALARA, producing high-quality diagnostic images, and working closely with radiologists and other healthcare professionals to support accurate diagnosis and patient care.
- What originally led you to pursue a career as an MRT?
I was always interested in healthcare and technology, and medical radiation technology allowed me to combine both interests. I wanted a career where I could directly help patients while using advanced imaging equipment. The opportunity to contribute to early diagnosis and treatment through diagnostic imaging motivated me to become an MRT.
- What does a typical day look like for you in your department or clinic?
A typical day involves preparing imaging rooms, verifying patient information, explaining procedures, positioning patients correctly, performing X-ray examinations, and ensuring image quality before sending the studies for interpretation. I also maintain infection control standards, follow radiation safety protocols, document patient information accurately, and collaborate with radiologists, physicians, and other healthcare staff to provide efficient patient care.
- What advice would you give to new MRTs entering the profession today?
I would encourage new MRTs to stay curious and continue learning throughout their careers. Develop strong communication skills, always prioritize patient safety and compassionate care, pay attention to proper positioning and image quality, and don’t hesitate to ask experienced colleagues for guidance. Staying up to date with new technologies and maintaining professionalism will help you grow in the profession.
- What aspects of your work do you find most rewarding?
The most rewarding aspect of my work is knowing that the images I produce help physicians make accurate diagnoses and guide patient treatment. I also enjoy interacting with patients, helping them feel comfortable during their examinations, and making a positive difference in their healthcare experience.
- What is your favourite part about being an MRT?
My favourite part of being an MRT is the combination of patient care and advanced medical technology. Every day brings different patients and unique cases, making the job both challenging and rewarding. I enjoy continuously improving my technical skills while contributing to better patient outcomes through diagnostic imaging.
