A Case Study: MRTs Across the Continuum of Cancer Care

Join us for the opening session at The Summit 2025 for an informative presentation on the role of MRTs across the continuum of cancer care.

MRTs play a central role in imaging, treating, and aiding in the diagnosis of cancer patients. A single patient will often interact with several MRTs from different disciplines throughout their care journey. While we are often separated by modality and may see ourselves as distinct, we are united by the patients we serve. How can greater awareness of each other’s roles enhance the patient experience and improve overall outcomes?

Using a case study, this session will highlight key touchpoints between MRTs. You’ll gain insight into the various roles MRTs play in a patient’s cancer care journey and explore ways to foster stronger connections and greater professional awareness across the wider MRT community.

Learning Objectives

  • Explain the importance of interprofessional collaboration in healthcare.
  • Describe the value of interprofessional awareness among MRT specialties and other allied health professionals.
  • Identify both the individual and collective roles of MRTs within the continuum of cancer care.

Interactive Discussion on Addressing Moral Distress: Towards Building Moral Wellness and Resilience

This interactive discussion will explore the moral conflicts experienced by MRTs. The pressures of healthcare resource allocation have led to a chronic shortage of healthcare workers, including MRTs. As a result, MRTs often experience moral distress when they are unable to provide the level of care they consider adequate due to limited resources and other circumstances beyond their control. While this distress reflects a strong sense of moral responsibility, it can take a psychological toll. If left unaddressed, repeated exposure to moral distress can seriously impact the well-being of those affected.

This presentation will review key concepts such as the moral distress crescendo and moral wellness. Participants will also try out a conversational and reflective technique for moral distress debriefing, an approach MRTs can use in practice to help mitigate the impact of moral distress and build moral resilience.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the concepts of moral distress crescendo and moral wellness.
  • Practice using REViVe, a conversational and reflective technique for moral distress debriefing, that MRTs can apply in their practice to help build moral resilience.

Terry Mitchell, RTR With over 33 years of experience in health care, Terry Mitchell brings a unique and deeply informed perspective to conversations around psychological health and moral distress in the workplace. Beginning his career in pre-hospital emergency care and evolving into a wide-ranging journey through medical imaging, Terry has held roles as a technologist, informaticist, manager, hospital administrator, and now supports medical imaging centralized hiring and workforce initiatives with Fraser Health.A graduate of the CAMRT Leadership Development Institute and former member of the CAMRT-BC Advisory Council, Terry has long championed workforce wellness. His work as a Critical Incident Stress Peer Debriefer has spanned decades, and he has presented on psychological health at both CAMRT and CAMRT-BC conferences. Moral distress reflects a natural progression of this work, as health authorities increasingly recognize the need for systemic support in addressing the emotional and ethical challenges faced by healthcare professionals.

Dr. Allen Alvarez

Allen Alvarez supports healthcare professionals in building moral wellness through ethics education, evaluation, analysis of ethical issues and moral distress consultation. He uses the growing knowledge in the field of applied ethics to understand moral experience and values that define good healthcare practices. The goal is to support ethical decisions that help patients, families, healthcare professionals and communities to flourish in their moral wellness and resilience.

Many different healthcare professional groups have invited Allen to support their learning about ethical decision-making and moral distress mitigation, including: healthcare administrators, clinical social workers, professional associations of social workers, ethics committees, social work educators, healthcare teams in hospices, long term care, home care, mental health and substance use, renal social work, intensive care units, respiratory therapists, dieticians, family physicians, emergency department, urgent primary care, and medical radiology. Allen has also been invited to support clinical veterinary educators in Asia to learn about moral distress and is currently helping this group to develop their own moral distress assessment based on Epstein and Hamric’s Moral Distress Scale for Healthcare Professionals.

Muskan Fatima, RTNM

Muskan is a Nuclear Medicine Technologist and a graduate of the British Columbia Institute of Technology. She specializes in PET/CT, and is currently practicing in both PET/CT and CT imaging. Muskan has made contributions to the CAMRT as a Site Ambassador and through volunteer positions at previous conferences. She has also peer reviewed for the Journal of Medical Imaging and Radiation Sciences. Recognized for her volunteer work within her community and her profession, alongside the initiative she has taken to support new staff, Muskan strives to contribute meaningfully to the ever-evolving field of medical imaging.

Muskan is passionate about advocating for mental health support for patients, their loved ones, and specifically for the healthcare professionals who work tirelessly to provide for those in need. Through her clinical work and speaking engagements, she is committed to supporting the next generation of imaging professionals. Looking forward, Muskan aspires to make connections with a variety of professionals, old and new, within our medical imaging community and beyond.

Sarah Cormack, RTT

Sarah has worked in radiation therapy for nearly 30 years, building a career she has so much gratitude for. As she approaches retirement in the near future, she is excited to begin a new chapter in solo entrepreneurship, bringing the same dedication and passion into her next adventure.

Emerging Technologies in Medical Imaging

Join us at The Summit 2025 to learn about two emerging technologies in Medical Imaging: Photon Counting CT and Applications of Artificial Intelligence in CT Image Reconstruction. This presentation will provide a brief overview of these technologies and offer insights for MRTs.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify two emerging technologies in Medical Imaging

Euclid’s current research interests are related to radiation dose optimization in computed tomography and digital radiography imaging systems, and the use of artificial intelligence in medical imaging.

Environmentally Sustainable Medical Imaging

Medical imaging accounts for 0.8-1% of total global greenhouse gas emissions – a significant impact worth addressing. Join us at The Summit 2025 to learn why reducing emissions and waste in healthcare is essential, and learn about practical, evidence-based strategies for reducing emissions and waste in radiology. This presentation will empower MRTs to support both planetary and patient health through climate-conscious clinical practice.
