Professional Excellence in Research Award
The Professional Excellence in Research Award is presented to a member, or group, who has demonstrated outstanding achievements in research within the healthcare sector. This awards recipient has made significant contributions to advancing knowledge, improving practice and enhancing patient care through their research endeavours.
The 2024 recipient of the Professional Excellence in Research Award is Sidsel Pedersen, RTR.
“Sidsel recently completed a Master’s degree with Athabasca University. Her accomplishments in research focus on the areas of gender identity and expression and how this relates to diagnostic imaging. Sidsel has made a significant contribution to this area of research which is evidenced by her publication record and presentations.
Sidsel’s research into gender diverse curriculum is very recently published, but will influence education programs in diagnostic imaging in the years to come.”
Innovative Leadership Award
The Innovative leadership award is presented to a member who has shown exceptional leadership qualities by pioneering innovative approaches within their field. This awards recipient demonstrates the ability to inspire and empower others, drives positive change and leads transformative initiatives, while also leading by example by demonstrating characteristics of respect, integrity and professionalism.
The 2024 recipient of the Innovative Leadership Award is Steve Decolle, RTMR.
“Steve exemplifies leadership through his commitment to fostering inclusive, supportive, and growth-oriented working environments. As the Provincial QA MR Practice Lead, he has consistently pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in MRI imaging.
Beyond his technical expertise, Steve is deeply committed to the professional development of others. He actively supports the adoption of new equipment and technologies, guiding frontline technologists through transitions and fostering a culture of learning and growth.
Steve is also a tireless advocate for our profession. He is highly respected both provincially and nationally, having presented at CAMRT conferences, served on the MRI Exam Validation Committee, and currently leading as Chair of the ACMDTT Council. His positive, approachable personality inspires those around him to drive change and engage in transformative initiatives. ”
Professional Excellence in Patient Care Award
The CAMRT-AB Award for Professional Excellence in Patient Care is designed to a member who has consistently delivered exceptional care to patients, demonstrating dedication, empathy and skill in their practice. This awards recipient goes above and beyond in ensuring the well-being and satisfaction of their patients, embodying excellence in every aspect of patient interaction and care delivery.
The 2024 recipient of the CAMRT-AB Professional Excellence in Patient Care Award is Grayce Cameron, RTR.
“Grayce has been an X-ray Technologist for over 47 years, and throughout that time, she has exemplified the very best of patient care and professional dedication. Her compassion, kindness, and genuine care for her patients are evident in every interaction. Whether it’s tending to patient’s needs or simply being a reassuring presence, Grayce makes sure each patient feels heard, safe, and comfortable.
Grayce’s influence extends beyond her direct patient care. She has been a leader in the X-ray community, mentoring generations of technologists with her commitment to excellence. Her patience and empathy have set a high standard in all areas of her practice. For those fortunate enough to work alongside her, she’s more than a colleague—she’s a mentor, a guide, and often, a mother figure.”
Excellence in Teaching Award
The Excellence in Teaching Award is presented to a member who demonstrates outstanding contributions in enhancing the teaching and learning experience of MRT students during their educational program. The recipient of this award actively engages students within the academic and/or clinical environment, and consistently remains up to date with practice standards while ensuring students aspire to reach their full potential.
The 2024 recipient of the CAMRT-AB Excellence in Teaching Award is Michel Therrien, RTR.
“Michel Therrien’s dedication to the education and development of MRT students is exemplary. Since 2012, Michel has served as Clinical Educator and General Radiography Supervisor at NLRHC in Fort McMurray, guiding 26 students through their practicums and playing a key role in their academic and clinical training.
By developing a targeted training program alongside his quality control specialist activities, Michel has significantly enhanced students’ skills and confidence in this complex area. Michel is also highly regarded for his ability to engage and inspire students, with feedback consistently praising his supportive, motivating, and challenging approach. His broader experience as a minor hockey coach complements his educational role, reinforcing his commitment to fostering positive learning environments both inside and outside the clinical setting.”
Young Professional Award
The Young Professional Award was created to honour a member who has made a significant contribution to the profession in the early stages of their career. The recipient of this award acts as a role model of social accountability and community engagement within the MRT community.
They also demonstrate an early and ongoing interest in the endeavours of MRTs.
The 2024 recipient of the Young Professional Award is Livia Vitaterna, RTR.
“Livia Vitaterna has quickly established herself as a leader and role model in the MRT field since becoming an MRT in September 2019. Her passion for the profession is evident in every aspect of her work. In July 2023, she joined the ACMDTT Council as a regulated member and assumed the role of Vice-Chair of the Governance Work Group Committee, where her leadership and initiative have already begun shaping the future of the profession.
Livia attended the CAMRT Leadership Development Institute, and she made an immediate impact on her peers. Engaging, insightful, and energetic, she has a natural ability to connect with others, bringing out the best in her peers while sharing her own knowledge. ”
Student Leadership Award
The Student Leadership Award is presented to a student member who has demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities in the last year of their program. The recipient of this award has shown initiative, collaboration and dedication in their organizational and leadership skills and has positively impacted their student and/or healthcare community through their leadership efforts.
The 2024 recipient of the Student Leadership Award is Victoria Jones, RTR.
“Victoria Jones demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities in her second year of the NAIT MRT program. She has shown initiative consistently in her final year of the program. The program called out for the fall 2023 Open House volunteers to come out on the weekend and engage prospective students and members of the public interested in the profession. Without hesitation, Victoria stepped up when it was easier not to. She demoed a mobile unit while answering questions and sharing positive aspects of the profession.
She also volunteered for the Program Preview in the winter of 2024. This time Victoria independently showcased a c-arm in use, wearing lead, and sharing concepts about the OR and the importance of radiation safety. Her responses to questions from the public audience were thoughtful and authentic, sharing her personal experiences from clinical.
Victoria has proudly demonstrated positivity and professionalism during her short time in the program. She has modeled the way to other students, as she displayed excellent academics, high levels of quality patient care, and a passion for volunteering. She is an MRT student with a spirit for service and will be a blessing to teams in the future, wherever she goes.“
Award for Academic Distinction
This award is presented to the graduate of an Alberta program who has filled both didactic and clinical requirements within the province, while maintaining CAMRT-AB membership. This award recipient has attained the highest score in Alberta on their initial attempt of the CAMRT certification exam for either their first or second discipline within the past year.
The 2024 recipient of the CAMRT-AB Award for Academic Distinction is Katlyn Buchak, RTR.
“Katlyn Buchak, a dedicated Medical Radiologic Technologist, was born in Edmonton and raised in Airdrie before moving to Leduc.
At NAIT, she formed lasting friendships and earned the esteemed Louise McKinney Post-Secondary Scholarship for her academic excellence.“
